At King’s Academy Rowner, we are committed to providing an ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich curriculum that inspires every child to achieve their full potential. We are continually reviewing and refining our curriculum to ensure it is engaging, relevant and prepares our pupils for success in the next stage of their education and in modern Britain.

Our curriculum is structured around three overarching themes, providing children with a broad, balanced and enriching education. Alongside the National Curriculum subjects, we place great importance on children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. Religious Education and Personal Development are integral to our curriculum, helping pupils develop empathy, resilience, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. French is taught throughout the school, and our curriculum provides rich opportunities for Character Education, drama, educational visits and memorable experiences that bring learning to life.

The promotion of British Values is woven throughout every aspect of school life and our curriculum. Through carefully planned learning experiences, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and everyday interactions, children develop an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We encourage our pupils to become responsible, active citizens who value diversity, contribute positively to their community and understand their role within modern British society.

High-quality teaching is at the heart of everything we do. We place a particular emphasis on oracy and the explicit teaching of vocabulary, recognising the significant impact these have on children’s academic achievement and future life chances. Research demonstrates that without a strong focus on language development, children from disadvantaged backgrounds are at greater risk of falling behind (Roulstone, Law et al., 2010). Oracy is the golden thread that runs through our curriculum, enabling pupils to articulate their thinking, communicate with confidence, collaborate effectively and engage in meaningful discussion across all subjects.

Our curriculum is underpinned by educational research and evidence-informed practice. We incorporate approaches such as Engineering Habits of Mind and Gosport Futures, ensuring children develop curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, resilience and problem-solving skills alongside secure subject knowledge. We are committed to meeting the needs of every learner, providing appropriate challenge and support so that all pupils can flourish.

Above all, we believe that children learn best through a combination of high expectations, purposeful teaching and first-hand experiences. We provide opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts, make connections across subjects and develop the confidence, character and skills they need for lifelong learning.

If you would like to find out more about our curriculum, please speak to your child’s class teacher or contact our Curriculum Leader, Miss Tuckley, via the School Office or through our enquiries email address.

Parents’ Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)

At King’s Academy Rowner, we value Religious Education (RE) as an important part of our pupils’ development, helping them explore a variety of concepts and their link to religion. However, we recognise that parents have the legal right to withdraw their children from RE lessons, either fully or partially, in accordance with government guidelines. If you choose to exercise this right, the process is straightforward:

  1. Parents or guardians must make a formal request in writing to the Executive Headteacher, outlining their decision to withdraw and specifying if it is from all or part of the RE curriculum.
  2. The school will acknowledge the request and arrange a meeting, if necessary, to discuss any concerns or clarify the impact of withdrawal.
  3. Alternative arrangements will be made for your child during RE lessons, ensuring they are supervised and engaged in other educational activities.

Please note that this right also extends to aspects of RE taught within other subjects or assemblies. We encourage open communication, so feel free to contact the school if you have any questions or need further information. If you are unsure about what we are teaching and why we would like to have the opportunity to talk this through with you.

We aim to support all students and their families while respecting their individual beliefs.
