Last week, Year 3 had a fantastic time diving deep into the Stone Age, taking part in a full day of hands-on learning across History, Art and Design Technology. They began by exploring historical sources to compare Stone Age homes with the houses we live in today. Building on this, the children used nets of 3D shapes to design and construct their own model Stone Age houses as part of their DT learning.
Next, the children revisited Stone Age cave paintings and discussed the natural materials early humans would have used. The children collected their own natural resources from the grounds and created their own cave-painting-inspired artwork. In the afternoon, the children were thrilled to welcome an archaeologist into school, who brought a range of real Stone Age artefacts for the children to handle and investigate. Pupils took part in four exciting carousel activities:
- dressing up as an archaeologist
- sorting bones and pottery fragments using tweezers
- completing a sand-tray excavation to uncover hidden artefacts
- and finally, meeting with Alice, our visiting archaeologist, to learn about some of the most fascinating items she had brought along
It was a wonderful day of practical discovery, curiosity and creativity.
