At King’s Academy Rowner, keeping children safe online is a shared responsibility between school and home. Each month, we send out an Online Safety Newsletter to support parents and carers with current guidance, practical tips and age-appropriate advice. These newsletters are emailed directly to families and are also available on our school website.
This month’s key highlights include:
🔹 Using AI to alter images
Children are increasingly aware of AI tools that can create or change images. The newsletter explains:
- What AI image generators are and how they can be used
- Why consent and privacy are essential when using images of others
- Clear guidance that AI tools must not be used to edit images of school staff or pupils
- How image manipulation can cause harm, even when not intended
🔹 TikTok and age restrictions
Parents are reminded that:
- TikTok has a minimum age requirement of 13
- Accounts should always be set up using a child’s real date of birth
- Built-in safety features such as private accounts, restricted mode and Family Pairing can help keep children safe
- Talking to children about online challenges and stranger contact is vital
🔹 Managing screen time
The newsletter shares helpful advice on:
- Creating healthy digital habits at home
- Balancing screen time with offline activities
- Supporting children to understand when and how to use devices safely
🔹 Helpful resources for families
This edition also signposts trusted guidance from organisations such as:
- NSPCC
- Internet Matters
- The Children’s Commissioner
- BBC CBeebies Parenting (for younger children)
We strongly encourage all parents and carers to take a few minutes each month to read the newsletter and discuss key messages with their child. These conversations make a real difference in helping children develop safe, responsible online behaviours. If you have any questions or concerns about online safety, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
