Year 5 have been busy in science this week learning about irreversible reactions and what better way to investigate than by making their very own sherbet?

The children combined lemon peel powder (acid), bicarbonate of soda, icing sugar and cornflour to see how the ingredients reacted together. They observed how the mixture creates a fizzy effect when eaten, demonstrating an irreversible reaction: once the ingredients have reacted, you can’t separate them back into their original forms.

The classroom was filled with excitement as the children measured, mixed and tested their sherbet creations, applying their scientific understanding in a fun and memorable way.
