Year 6 have begun exploring the fascinating world of pirates in their history lessons by investigating who the very first pirates were. At the start, the children held some stereotypical ideas about pirates, but they are already broadening their thinking and deepening their understanding.

The children have been learning to distinguish between primary sources (such as old maps, stone carvings, and illustrations from the time) and secondary sources (like modern history books and more recent artwork). They looked closely at what each source showed, considered how credible and trustworthy it might be, and discussed why some sources are more reliable than others.

The class also generated further questions to investigate and searched for wider connections to piracy. To their excitement, they even discovered links to the Viking.

The children showed curiosity, critical thinking, and imagination. They were ‘in role’ as historians setting sail to uncover the truth.
