This half-term, Year 5 have been delving into the story of the Magi and exploring how their gifts reflect a prophecy in their RE lessons. Today’s lesson took this learning further with a lively class discussion around the thought-provoking question: ‘Being able to predict the future will help individuals to succeed. Do you agree or disagree?’
The class engaged in a fascinating activity called a ‘Conscience Alley.’ Divided into two groups, the children prepared arguments for one of two viewpoints:
- It does matter what gifts were given to Jesus by the Magi.
- It doesn’t matter what gifts were given to Jesus by the Magi.
The highlight of the lesson came when ‘Jesus’ walked through the Conscience Alley, while classmates whispered their persuasive arguments. In the end, ‘Jesus’ had to decide which side had convinced him the most. It was a tough call, as the children presented such compelling points of view!
This engaging activity encouraged critical thinking, respectful debate, and deeper reflection on the significance of the Magi’s gifts and prophecy. Well done, Year 5, for such thoughtful and persuasive contributions!
